Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi Dies At 98, Leaves Behind 100 Children, 406 Grandchildren

Renowned Islamic scholar, leader, and cleric, Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi, has passed away at the age of over 98, leaving behind four wives, over 100 children, and 406 grandchildren.

Bauchi died at his residence in Kofar Gombe in Bauchi State. The eminent scholar had been battling an illness.

He was born on June 29, 1927, which is equivalent to Al-Muharram 1346 A.H in Islamic Calendar, in Nafada, then part of Bauchi State and now in Gombe State. Sheikh Dahiru rose to become one of the most influential leaders of the Tijjaniyya Islamic sect. His contributions to Islamic scholarship and education have been widely celebrated.

Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi died in his residence in the Kofar Gombe area of Bauchi metropolis, Bauchi State.
Four wives survive him, more than 100 children, over 406 grandchildren, and 100 great-grandchildren. Sheikh Dahiru began Tafsir (Qur’anic exegesis) in Bauchi in 1948 and served for decades as the coordinator of the annual Ramadan tafsir in both Bauchi and Kaduna States.
Until his death, he served as the deputy chairman of the Fatwa Committee of the Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs.

Sheikh Dahiru was widely regarded as one of the most prominent Islamic figures in Nigeria and across Africa.

He dedicated his life to the propagation of Islam, Qur’anic education, and the training of students in memorisation and recitation of the Holy Qur’an.

For decades, he led thousands of disciples and made significant contributions to Islamic scholarship and spiritual development.

Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed has mourned the passing of the renowned Islamic scholar, Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi.

In a condolence message issued by his media aide, Mukhtar Gidado, the governor, on behalf of his family, the government and people of Bauchi State, extended his condolences to the immediate family of the late Sheikh, his followers, students, and the entire Muslim Ummah across Nigeria and beyond.

He confirmed that Sheikh Bauchi died on Thursday morning at the age of 98 in Bauchi. The governor said of the late scholar: “He was a towering figure in Islamic scholarship, a man of deep faith, humility, and wisdom. His lifetime was devoted to the propagation of Islam, the teaching of the Holy Qur’an, and the moral and spiritual upliftment of humanity.”

One of his close associates, M. Daha Azhary Bauchi, announced the burial arrangements, stating, “The funeral prayer of Maulana Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi will be held tomorrow, Friday, 28-11-2025, in Bauchi.”

The late Sheikh began his Islamic education under the tutelage of his father, Alhaji Usman, and became a Hafiz of the Qur’an (memoriser of the Glorious Qur’an) before the age of 20.

He furthered his studies under numerous esteemed Islamic scholars both within and outside Nigeria, with Sheikh Ibrāhīm Inyass being his most influential teacher.

Tinubu Mourns Renowned Muslim Leader, Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi

President Bola Tinubu has mourned the passing of Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi. In a statement by his spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, the president described the late leader of the Tijjaniyya Muslim Brotherhood as a moral compass who dedicated his life to teaching and preaching.

President Tinubu said Sheikh Bauchi’s loss is monumental not only to his family and teeming followers but also to the nation.

Sultan Pays Tribute To Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi

The Jama’atu Nasril Islam (JNI), under the leadership of the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has paid tribute to the renowned Islamic scholar, Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi, who passed away at the age of 98.

In a statement issued by the JNI secretary-general, Prof. Khalid Abubakar Aliyu, the late Sheikh Bauchi was described as a beacon of guidance and unwavering dedication to the cause of Islam, adding that his departure leaves a void that will be hard to fill.

Northern Governors Mourn the Late Sheikh

The chairman of the Northern States Governors’ Forum (NSGF) and Governor of Gombe State, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, has expressed deep sorrow over the demise of renowned Islamic scholar and global Tijjaniyya spiritual leader, Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi.

In a statement released by the governor’s media aide on Thursday, Yahaya described the late Sheikh as a scholar of exceptional depth whose life, teachings, and spiritual guidance had touched millions across generations.

He stated that Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi devoted his century-long life to the propagation of Islamic knowledge, contributing immensely to the understanding of the Holy Qur’an, Hadith, Islamic jurisprudence, and the deeper spiritual dimensions of Sufism.

Barau Mourns Prominent Islamic Scholar

Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau Jibrin, has mourned the passing of prominent Islamic scholar, Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi, who died in the early hours of Thursday.

In a statement issued to journalists yesterday in Abuja by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ismail Mudashir, Senator Barau described Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi’s death as “a huge vacuum that will be difficult to fill,” extolling the scholar’s decades of unwavering service to Islam, humanity, and the global Muslim community.

He said the renowned scholar and spiritual leader influenced millions across Nigeria and beyond through his preaching, scholarship, and exemplary leadership.

The Etsu Nupe and Chairman, Niger State Council of Traditional Rulers, Alhaji Yahaya Abubakar, has described the death of renowned Islamic scholar and spiritual leader of the Tijjaniya sect, Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi, as a significant loss to the Muslim Ummah worldwide.

The royal father described the late cleric as a fountain of knowledge and a God-fearing leader who dedicated his life to propagating Islam and promoting peaceful coexistence.

While condoling with the immediate family of the deceased, the government, and the people of Bauchi State, he said the death of Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi was a considerable loss.

The Etsu Nupe noted his efforts in providing scholarships, offering spiritual guidance, and expanding Islamic teachings across generations.
