Fulham remain in limbo regarding Marco Silva’s future at Craven Cottage, despite a three-year contract offer reportedly still on the table. The club is keen to retain their manager.
Silva, 48, is understood to be a candidate for the vacant head coach position at Chelsea, even after being offered a new deal by Fulham in November. He has indicated he needs more time to consider his options. Chelsea’s shortlist is believed to include former Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso and current Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola.
Sources close to Silva suggest he harbours ambitions to manage at the highest level, though he has demonstrated loyalty by rejecting multiple approaches from Saudi clubs.
This has left Fulham in an uncertain position, though the club reportedly has contingency plans and has explored alternative options. Their preferred outcome, however, is to keep Silva, who is understood to have a good relationship with the club’s ownership.
Fulham’s situation, while uncertain, could be more favourable than that of rivals Bournemouth, who know Andoni Iraola will depart at the season’s end. The two sides are set to meet on Sunday, both vying for European qualification.
Amidst this backdrop, Silva gave a candid interview last week to DAZN in his native Portuguese, stating: “The club has been clear with us about its intention for us to stay here for more years.” He reiterated that his immediate focus is on Fulham’s final three matches as they push for European qualification, and that he would reflect on the season before making a final decision on his future. Silva also did not rule out a return to Portuguese football when questioned, especially with Benfica coach Jose Mourinho linked to the vacant managerial role at Real Madrid.
