Small Chops, Big Profits: The Recipe For Business Success

With rising unemployment and growing demand for affordable snacks, many entrepreneurs are transforming simple pastries such as egg rolls, fish pies and small chops into profitable ventures, proving that modest start-up capital can be the recipe for business success.

Rather than remain idle in the face of persistent unemployment, many young Nigerians are embracing the small chops business as a practical means of earning a living.

For some, especially students, selling egg rolls, fish pies and other pastries has become a way to support their education, cover daily expenses and reduce the financial burden of tuition and other academic costs while pursuing their studies.

From school campuses and office districts to religious gatherings, parties and roadside kiosks, small chops remain popular because they are affordable, convenient and widely enjoyed. Their steady demand has created income opportunities for thousands of entrepreneurs, enabling many to earn a daily living while gradually growing their businesses.

Industry operators say the business requires relatively low start-up capital and can be operated from home using basic baking or frying equipment, quality ingredients and proper hygiene practices. Many entrepreneurs start by supplying neighbours, schools and offices before expanding into event catering and corporate contracts.

Speaking with LEADERSHIP Weekend, Mrs Lucy Egadamo, a caterer based in Oju Ore, Ota, Ogun State, said consistency and product quality have helped her build a loyal customer base.

“I started with just egg rolls and fish pies using a small amount of capital. As customers became satisfied with the taste and quality, they kept referring others. Today, I receive orders from schools, offices and individuals planning small events. It’s a business that rewards dedication and consistency,” she said.

Egg rolls continue to enjoy strong patronage because they are filling and appeal to both children and adults. Fish pies are also gaining popularity as consumers increasingly seek snacks with richer fillings and better nutritional value

Small chops, including samosas, spring rolls, puff-puff, peppered gizzards, mini sausages and mosa, have become essential features at weddings, birthdays, seminars and corporate events, making them a lucrative niche for caterers and food vendors.

Mrs Olopade Bunmi, who operates at Sango Market, Ogun State, said the business has remained profitable despite rising ingredient costs.

“The prices of flour, cooking oil and eggs have gone up, but people still buy because these snacks are affordable. We adjust our production, reduce waste and ensure every product meets customers’ expectations. During festive periods and weekends, demand usually increases, giving us better returns,” she said.

One of the biggest attractions of the business is its healthy profit margin. Depending on ingredient costs and location, entrepreneurs can often earn significant returns by producing in batches and selling directly to consumers or through retailers.

The business also offers flexibility. Vendors can operate from home, roadside outlets, mobile carts or online platforms, taking orders via social media and delivering to customers. Digital payment options have further simplified transactions and expanded market reach.

As the business grows, entrepreneurs can invest in larger equipment, employ additional staff and expand into wholesale supply for supermarkets, schools, eateries and event planners.
