Nigerian media personality Solomon Buchi has come out firmly in support of Manchester City winger Jeremy Doku, after the Belgian international left the Club World Cup to be by his partner’s side for the birth of their first child.

Buchi dismissed criticism of Doku’s decision, arguing that a father’s presence during labour carries far deeper significance than a purely ceremonial role. Emotional support and reassurance, he said, matter enormously to a woman in that moment, and no trophy should outweigh that.

The commentator contended that the family must always take precedence over professional ambitions, particularly for such a landmark occasion as the arrival of a first child. He held Doku up as a model for men more broadly, suggesting the footballer’s choice reflects exactly the kind of priorities fathers ought to demonstrate.

“Your presence tells your wife and child that family comes first,” Buchi remarked.

The episode has reignited wider debate about the expectations placed on professional athletes and where their responsibilities should lie when personal and career commitments collide.
