Basketball development in Nigeria’s South-East region has received a significant boost following the commissioning of a new basketball court in Ebonyi State and the successful staging of the maiden South-East Regional Basketball Championship.
The championship, held from 5 to 7 June 2026, brought together young players from across the region in what stakeholders described as a major step towards youth empowerment, talent discovery and the revitalisation of basketball in the South-East.
For many years, the region has been recognised as a fertile ground for identifying talented players, but a lack of major competitions, infrastructure and professional clubs often limited opportunities for development. That narrative, however, appears to be changing as basketball stakeholders intensify efforts to align the South-East with other thriving regions of the country.
At the centre of that transformation is Ugo Udezue, the South-East representative on the board of the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF), whose recent initiatives have focused on creating sustainable pathways for young players and coaches.
Udezue, who returned from the United States after establishing the African Basketball League (ABL), later known as the Continental Basketball League (CBL), has been championing programmes aimed at expanding opportunities for basketball development across the region.
One of the highlights of the championship was the commissioning of the newly constructed Hon. Richard Idike Basketball Court in Abakaliki, a facility donated by Udezue.
Representing Ebonyi State Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru at the event, the Commissioner for Youth Development and Sports, Richard Idike, described the tournament as a landmark achievement for the state.
He noted that it was the first time Ebonyi had hosted a regional basketball championship of such scale and significance.
“The championship goes beyond competition,” Idike said. “It provides a platform for regional integration, friendship and the discovery of future stars capable of representing Nigeria on the international stage.”
He also commended NBBF President Engr. Musa Kida for his continued contributions to basketball development nationwide and praised Udezue for facilitating both the tournament and the new facility.
Local basketball coach Kingsley Auchu, popularly known as Coach Saucer, welcomed the development, stressing the importance of quality infrastructure in nurturing young talent.
“This is a welcome development,” he said. “For a very long time, we did not have a facility like this. It will greatly improve our programmes and help our players compete at a higher level.”
However, the project has not been without controversy.
Abia State Basketball Association Chairman and NBBF board member Victor Okoro questioned claims that a new court had been built, alleging that the project involved the renovation of an existing facility rather than the construction of a completely new one.
“I have heard reports about a new court in Abakaliki, but from the information available to me, it was a renovation of an existing area,” Okoro claimed, while acknowledging that he had not personally inspected the facility.
Former Imo State Basketball Association Chairman Kelechi Anosike also disputed claims that the court was newly built.
In response, Commissioner Idike strongly rejected the allegations, insisting that the facility was developed from the ground up.
“I am not surprised by such comments,” he said. “Some people are determined to criticise projects that contribute to development. Anyone saying this is not a new court is being deliberately mischievous. The project started with securing the space and developing it from scratch.”
Supporting the commissioner’s position, basketball coach Nwoyechi of the Enugu State Sports Commission said he witnessed the project’s development from inception.
“I was involved from the beginning and can confirm that work started on an empty space,” he said. “The project was fully funded by Ugo Udezue, who made a significant personal sacrifice to ensure its completion.”
Nwoyechi also praised the organisation of the regional championship, stating that Udezue financed the event and ensured participating teams received the necessary support.
The momentum behind basketball development in the South-East has continued with the ongoing second phase of the NBBF Men’s Premier League in Enugu. The hosting of Nigeria’s top domestic basketball competition in the region is considered a historic milestone, as the league had rarely been staged in the South-East over several decades.
Despite criticism from some quarters, Udezue remains focused on expanding opportunities for young athletes across the region.
“If you do not have critics, you are probably not doing something worthwhile,” he said.
“Our focus remains on basketball development, youth empowerment and infrastructure across the South-East. We are proud of the progress being made in Ebonyi, through Coal City Blazers and through other initiatives creating opportunities for the next generation.
“We will remain focused on the work and leave the commentary to others.”
He also expressed appreciation to Commissioner Idike and NBBF President Musa Kida for their support and commitment to advancing basketball development in the region.
As new facilities emerge and major competitions arrive in the South-East, many stakeholders believe the region is entering a new era—one that could transform it from a scouting hub into a genuine powerhouse of Nigerian basketball.
