Spain, on Tuesday, began three days of national mourning following a deadly collision between two high-speed trains that claimed at least 41 lives, marking the country’s worst rail disaster in more than a decade.

The accident occurred late Sunday near the town of Adamuz in the southern Andalusia region. An Iryo-operated train travelling from Malaga to Madrid derailed and veered onto an adjacent track, where it collided with an oncoming high-speed train. Both trains derailed on impact.

Authorities confirmed the death toll rose to 41 after the body of a passenger was recovered on Monday evening from one of the damaged Iryo carriages. Regional officials said more than 120 people were injured in the crash, with 39 victims including four children, still receiving treatment in hospital.

As the country entered a period of mourning, flags were lowered to half-mast on public buildings, television presenters wore black, and cabinet members scaled back public engagements.

Rescue operations continued on Monday, with heavy machinery deployed to lift severely damaged carriages and allow emergency workers better access to the wreckage. The head of Andalusia’s regional government, Juan Manuel Moreno, cautioned that it could take another 24 to 48 hours to determine the final number of fatalities.

King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia were expected to visit Adamuz later on Tuesday to meet with rescuers, officials and those affected by the tragedy.
