The latest Marvel superhero film, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, has brought in $927 million in global ticket sales during its opening weekend, making it the second-biggest global opening weekend in cinema history.

The film, which stars Tom Holland alongside Zendaya, quickly surpassed its estimated $225 million production budget. Its opening weekend performance trails only Avengers: Endgame, which generated over $1.2 billion during its debut in 2019.

In North America, the movie set a second-best box office record by generating $335 million in ticket sales. Internationally, distributor Sony Pictures reported that the film made $572 million from more than 73,000 screens outside the United States, including $121 million in China and $49 million in the United Kingdom.

The strong performance provides a significant boost for Marvel Studios ahead of its upcoming release, Avengers: Doomsday, following a period where several recent superhero releases underperformed at the box office.

Brand New Day picks up several years after the events of 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home, following Peter Parker as he continues his crime-fighting activities in a world that no longer remembers his identity.

Reacting to the opening numbers, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige described the global reception as phenomenal and expressed gratitude to cinema audiences for supporting the theatrical release.

The success comes as the global box office continues its recovery, with several major releases this year helping push North American ticket sales toward the $10 billion mark for the first time since 2019.
