Spirit Airlines has announced an immediate shutdown of its operations, cancelling all flights and halting global service, effective Friday night.

In a statement, the budget carrier said the decision was taken with “great disappointment,” marking the end of its decades-long run in the aviation industry. The airline confirmed that all existing bookings have been cancelled, and passengers will not be able to contact customer support for assistance.

Customers who paid via credit or debit cards will receive automatic refunds to their original payment methods. However, the airline stated it will not facilitate alternative travel arrangements.

In response, American Airlines has stepped in, offering “rescue fares” on select routes to assist affected passengers.

Spirit Airlines noted it was proud of its legacy as a pioneer of ultra-low-cost travel, despite the sudden closure. The development leaves thousands of travellers scrambling for alternatives and marks a significant shake-up in the global aviation sector.
