Health stakeholders and parents have urged government authorities to establish special departments in schools for children living with autism in Bauchi state.

The appeal took centre stage during activities marking World Autism Awareness Day, where stakeholders highlighted the urgent need for structured support systems to help affected children thrive.

Sabiratu Aliyu, a mother of eight, four of whom are autistic at varying levels. Sharing her personal experience, she stressed that children on the autism spectrum require specialised care, tailored learning environments, and targeted developmental activities.

“Each child faces unique challenges and needs special attention,” she said, underscoring the importance of early intervention and proper guidance for families.

Aliyu also noted that awareness programmes play a critical role in educating parents on effective care strategies.

She called on the government to establish dedicated schools and specialised units within existing institutions to ensure no child is left behind.

Beyond education, she urged media organisations to scale up public enlightenment campaigns, particularly through radio and television, warning that many families remain unaware of autism and its early signs.

Also speaking at the event, Happiness Jonas, Bauchi State Coordinator of “Spark a Spectrum,” said the programme was organised in collaboration with the Department of Psychiatry at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital.

She explained that the 2026 theme, “Autism and Humanity: Every Life Has Value,” underscores the importance of inclusion, dignity, and equal opportunities for children living with autism.

Jonas expressed satisfaction with the strong turnout of parents and children, describing it as a sign of growing awareness. She, however, called on policymakers to match this momentum with concrete investments in education and support services.

As awareness grows, stakeholders say the message is clear: with the right support systems, children living with autism can unlock their full potential and contribute meaningfully to society.
