In recent years, the federal government has increased its revenue drive through tax. This has increased the level of awareness of tax by not only corporates but also small businesses and individuals.

The increased tax awareness has created a gap for tax professionals in the country as more small companies are in need of professional advice. Starting a career as a tax professional, commonly known as a taxman or tax consultant, typically requires a combination of education, training, and practical experience.

A degree in accounting, finance, business administration, or a related field can provide a solid foundation for a career in taxation. In starting a career as a taxman there is need to consider pursuing a bachelor’s or master’s degree to enhance your knowledge and credentials.

Pursue a bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, economics, or a related field. This will provide you with a strong foundation in financial and tax concepts. Asides this, you need to gain practical experience such as looking for entry-level positions or internships at accounting firms, tax consulting firms, or government tax agencies in Nigeria.

Practical experience will help you understand the Nigerian tax system and develop the necessary skills. There is also need to understand the Nigerian tax system. Familiarize yourself with the tax laws, regulations, and procedures in Nigeria.

The primary tax authority in Nigeria is the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS). Stay updated on changes in tax legislation by regularly visiting the FIRS website and referring to relevant tax publications. There are also state revenue boards which you would need to keep abreast of their laws and activities.

Practicing as a taxman in Nigeira requires professional certifications. While not mandatory, professional certifications can enhance your credibility and marketability. In Nigeria, you might consider pursuing the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN) certification. CITN offers various levels of certification, such as Associate, Professional, and Fellow.

Being a member of the CITN is one, obtaining a license is another. To become a member of the CITN, you need to follow the membership application process and fulfill the requirements set by the institute. Here are the general steps to become a member:

The specific requirements for membership may vary based on the membership category you are applying for (e.g., Associate, Professional, or Fellow). Typically, you will need a relevant educational background and professional experience in taxation or a related field.

First, you obtain a membership application form either by reaching out to their office, or download the form from their online portal if available. Having completed the form, attach any supporting documents, such as academic transcripts, certificates, and proof of work experience, as specified by the CITN.

Submit the required application fee along with your completed application form. The fee amount may vary depending on the membership category you are applying for. Ensure you follow the payment instructions provided by the CITN and submit your application.

The CITN will review your application, including your qualifications, experience, and supporting documents. They may verify the information provided and assess your suitability for membership. Depending on the membership category you are applying for, you may need to pass an examination conducted by the CITN.

The examination assesses your knowledge and competence in taxation.

If your application is accepted and you meet all the requirements, you will be notified by the CITN. Once approved, you will be invited to attend the induction ceremony, where you will formally become a member of the institute.

It’s important to note that the specific requirements and processes may be subject to change, so it’s advisable to visit the official CITN website or contact their office directly for the most up-to-date and accurate information on becoming a member. They can provide you with detailed guidance, application forms, and any additional requirements specific to your membership category.

In obtaining a practicing license, the CITN requires that the applicant must be a member of the Institute with a minimum of 18 months pre/post tax working experience and must have a minimum of 35 Credit Units Hours of the Institute.

Having met these conditions, the applicant fills out a form which will include the proposed name and address of the Tax practice firm as well as the name, address, phone number and email address of the firm where tax working experience was acquired. The applicant must also ensure that the District Form is endorsed by the District Society.

Joining professional organizations, such as the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN), will also provide networking opportunities, access to resources, and ongoing professional development. You would need to attend tax seminars, workshops, and conferences to meet other tax professionals in Nigeria as networking can help you stay informed about industry trends, job opportunities, and potential mentors

As Nigerian tax laws can change regularly, you will need to stay on top of changes in the tax space. It is crucial to stay informed, so you need to continuously educate yourself by attending tax training programs, workshops, or webinars offered by professional organizations and reputable tax institutions.

You may need to consider specialization. As you gain experience, consider specializing in specific areas of taxation, such as corporate tax, value-added tax (VAT), personal income tax, or international tax.

Specialization can help you stand out and develop expertise in a specific area.

Once you have gained sufficient experience and expertise, you may choose to start your own tax practice or work as a freelance tax consultant. This allows you to serve clients directly and have greater control over your career.

It’s important to note that specific requirements and processes may vary, so it’s advisable to consult the CITN and other relevant authorities in Nigeria for the most up-to-date and accurate information regarding becoming a tax professional in the country.
