The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has challenged the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to take responsibility for the hunger and economic hardship confronting Nigerians instead of blaming previous administrations.
The opposition party said Nigerians deserved practical solutions to rising food prices, unemployment, insecurity and the declining purchasing power of citizens rather than what it described as persistent attempts by the APC to evade accountability.
The PDP’s National Publicity Secretary, Hon. Jungudo Haruna Mohammed, stated this in a press release issued on Monday in response to remarks by the APC Publicity Secretary during an appearance on News Central’s Breakfast Show.
The party also referenced similar remarks reportedly made by President Bola Tinubu in Kaduna during the flag-off of his 2027 re-election campaign.
It accused the APC of attempting to divert public attention from the economic challenges facing the country under its administration.
The PDP urged the Federal Government to explain its plans to make food affordable, support farmers, strengthen local food production, create jobs, improve security, tackle corruption and electricity challenges, reduce transportation costs and restore the purchasing power of ordinary Nigerians.
While acknowledging what it described as some achievements of the Tinubu administration, where applicable, the party rejected the use of the PDP’s 16 years in power as a blanket justification for the current administration’s shortcomings.
According to the PDP, recognising any genuine achievements of the present government should not be interpreted as an endorsement of all its policies or an acceptance of attempts to transfer responsibility for current economic difficulties to previous administrations.
The party argued that Nigerians deserved answers about the APC’s performance after more than 10 years in power, insisting that the ruling party should explain its achievements and outline concrete measures to address the country’s economic and security challenges.
It maintained that although the policies and circumstances of previous administrations could provide historical context, they could not serve as a permanent justification for the difficulties confronting Nigerians.
The PDP said every administration should be assessed based on its policies, decisions, achievements and, particularly, the living conditions of the people.
It added that Nigerians were demanding practical solutions to rising living costs, food insecurity and security challenges rather than prolonged political arguments over the performance of previous governments.
The opposition party also expressed confidence that Nigerians would assess political parties based on their records, policies and commitment to public welfare.
It claimed that the growing desire for a return to PDP leadership reflected Nigerians’ yearning for improved governance, better living conditions and a more secure and prosperous country.
The party urged the APC to focus on addressing the country’s challenges through concrete, measurable and sustainable policies capable of providing meaningful relief to citizens.
“Nigerians deserve solutions, not excuses,” the PDP said, insisting that the government in power must account for its stewardship and present a credible path towards economic recovery, food security and an improved standard of living.
The party maintained that the APC must take ownership of its record and demonstrate its commitment to fulfilling its promises to Nigerians.
