Vice President of Nigeria, Kashim Shettima, has cautioned the media against the growing trend of romanticising serious national issues, describing it as a dangerous deviation from the press’ constitutional role of upholding truth and accountability.

Speaking through his Special Adviser on Special Duties, Modibbo Umar, at the 17th LEADERSHIP Conference and Awards held at the Old Banquet Hall, State House, Abuja on Tuesday, the Vice President emphasised the need for media practitioners to maintain integrity in the face of increasing pressure to sensationalise public discourse.

“We must resist the temptation to romanticise serious national issues or frame them in ways that distort public understanding,” the Vice President warned. “Doing so only weakens the fabric of our democracy and derails our collective efforts at nation-building.”

The theme of the annual conference and awards, ‘Challenges amd Oppotunites In Nigeria’s Fiscal Federalism’, provided a platform for key stakeholders in governance, business, and civil society to reflect on the challenges facing the country and the role of leadership in addressing them.

Vice President Shettima also praised LEADERSHIP Newspapers Group for its dedication and hard work over the years, saying “I commend LEADERSHIP Newspaper for the vision to convene this vital discourse and for shining the light on those who have chosen to lead with courage and competence. May we never tire of striving for a better Nigeria.”
