A high school teacher in the United States has died after a prank by his students took a tragic turn outside his home in Georgia.
The teacher, identified as Jason Hughes, 40, was accidentally run over while coming out to surprise students who had come to his house to carry out a toilet paper prank, according to reports.
BBC reported that Hughes stepped outside his residence to catch the students who were tossing toilet paper over trees as part of the practical joke.
However, the situation turned fatal when the teacher slipped on the rain-soaked ground and fell. As the students attempted to flee the scene in two separate cars, one of the vehicles inadvertently ran over him, authorities said.
The driver of the car, Jayden Ryan Wallace, 18, has been charged with vehicular homicide. Wallace and four other 18-year-olds involved in the incident were also charged with criminal trespass and littering on private property.
Officials said Wallace and two others stopped immediately after the accident to render assistance before emergency responders arrived. Hughes was subsequently taken to a hospital where he later died.
Despite the charges filed, Hughes’ family has called for leniency toward the students.
In a statement to the New York Times, his wife, Laura Hughes, who also teaches at the same high school, described her husband as a beloved educator who had anticipated the prank.
According to her, Hughes was aware of the students’ plan and had been waiting outside to catch them in the act.
She added that the family supports dropping the charges against the students, stressing that the tragedy should not destroy their lives.
“This is a terrible tragedy, and our family is determined to prevent a separate tragedy from occurring, ruining the lives of these students,” she said. “This would be counter to Jason’s lifelong dedication of investing in the lives of these children.”
The Hall County School District also paid tribute to Hughes, describing him as a passionate teacher, mentor and coach who was admired by both students and colleagues.
Meanwhile, members of the community have created a memorial outside the school where he taught and coached to honour his memory.
