The religious leader conferred the traditional title on Yahaya, the 22nd COAS, when he delivered a speech at a grand reception organised by the Sokoto State government in honour of Yahaya at Giginya Stadium, Sokoto.

He said Yahaya had demonstrated a true sense of commitment and responsibility while in the military, especially in the fight against Boko Haram and other security challenges in the North and other parts of the country.

“I knew Faruk Yahaya when he was a young military officer and he has been growing from strength to strength as a result of his loyalty, hard work and dedication to duties of the military profession.

“I hereby confer on General Faruk Yahaya the traditional title of Zaruman Sakkwato, a title only bestowed on illustrious sons and daughters of the state who distinguished themselves as warriors and other human endeavours within and outside the state,” he said.

Governor of Sokoto State Ahmed Aliyu at the occasion, described Yahaya as a role model worthy of emulation by the Nigerian youths.

Aliyu said the reception was a way of thanking the former COAS for his commitment to Nigeria being the first indigene of Sokoto State, to attain the rank of Lt-General and in extension serve as COAS.

In his remarks, the chief of army staff General Taoreed Lagbaja described General Yahaya as a detribalised military officer who created an atmosphere of peace in the Nigerian Army.

He said the former COAS is a mentor and selfless boss to many while in the military adding that the good things he did and left behind in the Nigerian Army would definitely continue to be remembered for time immemorial.

In his goodwill message, the chief of defence staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa, commended the state government for recognising the contribution and efforts of the former army chief and honoured him with a befitting reception.

In his remarks, Faruk thanked President Muhammadu Buhari for entrusting him with the responsibility of commanding the Nigerian Army in one of the most critical moments of the nation’s history.
