Sunderland Agree £30m Deal For Lyon Winger Fofana

Sunderland have reached an agreement with Ligue 1 side Lyon for the transfer of Belgium international winger Malick Fofana, in a deal valued at nearly £30m.

The 21-year-old is currently travelling to England to undergo a medical examination and is expected to commit to a five-year contract with the Black Cats. The initial transfer fee stands at £25.6m, with an additional £4.3m payable in performance-related add-ons.

Fofana is said to be eager to join Sunderland ahead of the club’s first European campaign in 51 years, having secured a place in the Europa League through their seventh-placed finish in the Premier League last season.

The move comes after Premier League champions Arsenal registered interest in the forward, though they ultimately failed to reach an agreement with Lyon over a transfer fee.

Fofana, who began his professional career at KAA Gent before moving to Lyon in 2024, will link up with Austrian defender Kevin Danso at the Stadium of Light. Danso is set to arrive from Tottenham Hotspur on an initial loan arrangement that includes an option for a permanent transfer.

Sunderland have been active in the summer window, having already secured defenders Thomas Meunier and Dayann Methalie, as well as midfielder Jules Ahoka. The club’s campaign began with a loss at Ipswich Town, but they rebounded on Sunday with a victory over Fulham.
