The Super Eagles of Nigeria departed for South Africa yesterday morning ahead of their crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup African Qualifier (Matchday 8) clash against South Africa’s Bafana Bafana.

The journey to South Africa was not without uncertainty, as South African aviation authorities initially withheld a landing permit for the Nigerian chartered flight. Fortunately, the issue was later resolved, allowing the Nigerian contingent to land in Johannesburg before proceeding to Bloemfontein.

The team is expected to hold their final training session today in preparation for Tuesday’s high-stakes encounter at the Toyota Stadium in Bloemfontein.

Travelling aboard a ValueJet aircraft, the squad comprises 22 players following the unfortunate injury of key forward Victor Osimhen. The talented striker sustained an injury during the first half of the Super Eagles’ narrow 1-0 victory against the Amavubi of Rwanda.

Osimhen has since returned to Turkey for further treatment, leaving the team to rally without one of their star players. This setback places added pressure on the remaining squad members as they prepare for the challenge ahead.

Coach Eric Chelle’s side aims to secure their third victory in the qualifiers when they face South Africa at the Toyota Stadium in Bloemfontein on Tuesday. The Super Eagles currently occupy third place in Group C with 10 points, trailing the group leaders, South Africa, who boast an impressive 16 points from seven matches.

The game against South Africa is critical for the Super Eagles as they seek to improve their chances of qualifying for the next World Cup. With their last match against Rwanda marking a hard-fought win, maintaining momentum will be vital as they face a South African team currently in fine form.

Fans and analysts alike will be keenly observing the team’s performance, particularly in light of Osimhen’s absence. The Super Eagles hope to rally and deliver a strong showing against their rivals, making this match a focal point in their World Cup qualifying journey.
