Former Super Eagles goalkeeper Idah Peterside has urged Arthur Okonkwo to prove his worth on the international stage, following FIFA’s approval for the Wrexham shot-stopper to represent Nigeria.
The 24-year-old, who previously featured for England at youth level, was cleared by FIFA on Monday to switch his international allegiance, making him eligible for the Super Eagles.
Okonkwo now joins a competitive pool of goalkeepers vying for a spot, including Stanley Nwabali, Maduka Okoye, and Francis Uzoho.
Peterside, however, cautioned that strong club form does not automatically guarantee national team success, highlighting the distinct challenges of African international football.
“Well, he still has to prove himself. Being good for your club is quite different from playing for Nigeria,” Peterside told Soccernet.ng.
He elaborated on how many players have excelled at club level only to struggle with the national team, attributing this to the contrasting conditions between European club football and the African game. “When you’re in England, the weather is good, the clubs are well organised. But when you come to Africa, the situation is always different.”
Despite this, the former goalkeeper acknowledged Nigeria’s current strength in the goalkeeping department. “In the last few years, I’m not sure we’ve really had problems in that department because Nwabali has done well, and Maduka has also come back.”
Okonkwo, an Arsenal academy product with spells at Crewe Alexandra and Sturm Graz, has made over 100 appearances for Wrexham, playing a key role in their two recent promotions.
With Nigeria scheduled to face Zimbabwe in the Unity Cup in May, followed by friendlies against Poland and Portugal in June, Okonkwo could soon have the opportunity to make his senior debut.
