Nigerian Institution of Surveyors (NIS) has counselled the Federal Government to adopt proper mapping of the country to curb the worsening insecurity.

The National President of the Institution, Dr Kayode Oluwamotemi who gave the advice said such remains fundamental to addressing insecurity in the country.

Oluwamotemi spoke while presenting a Communiqué at the end of the Institution’s 56th Annual General Meeting (AGM) and Conference held in Ado Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital.

At the AGM with the theme: “Mapping Policies, Strategies and Spatial Infrastructure for Sustainable E-Governance in Nigeria”, he said the mapping will show “what is where and where it was.

“You will see houses, huts detect people as they mobilize and plan to cause havoc before the execution stage.

‘’For instance, is the Sambisa properly mapped to see each house or hut? The police and other security agents are human beings and can work within the spirit of their strength and what is available”.

He maintained that maps are parts of the instruments actually needed to tackle insecurity.

The NIS boss also posited that locations are fundamental in the global trend of governance but said Nigeria is lagging behind in spatially driven governance.

He added that roles of surveying and mapping in the realization of e-governance in public and private sectors are hampered by poor awareness.
