The suspended chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Owan West local government area of Edo State, Hon Dickson Ahonsi and five councillors on Friday defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) amid face-off between the councils and Governor Monday Okpebholo.
Ahonsi who stormed the APC Secretariat in Benin was received by members of the state executive of the party. He said his decision to join the APC was influenced by the steps taken so far by Governor Okpebholo to the development the state.
The chairman and the five councillors who were presented with brooms, the party’s symbol, said they would ensure their other colleagues join the APC to support the Okpebholo-led administration.
He said, “I intend to join the APC today because of what the governor is doing. Firstly, his activities on assumption of office. He has made important appointments unlike the previous government.
Soon the list of commissioners will be released and it is a welcome development.
“The projects that he has embarked upon shows clearly that that Edo is in safe hands and that is why I am here to join the party.
Receiving the suspended chairman and councilors into the party, Edo State secretary of the APC, Lawrence Okah, said the doors of the party were open to receive more defectors.
“We have long been expecting you to join us. APC now has five councillors and more will come. Use the broom to mobilise other people to join the party,” he said.
