A Port Harcourt-based local tabloid, National Network Newspaper, yesterday honoured the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Rivers State, Siminalaye Fubara, with two awards of excellence as “Most Outstanding Technocrat of the Year and “Man of Peace”, as part of events marking its 18th anniversary.
Also honoured were two members of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Dumnamene Dekor and Hon. Awaji-Inombek Abiante as “Most Outstanding Federal Lawmaker of the Year” and “Most Impactful Federal Lawmaker of the Year, respectively.
The immediate past chairman of the PDP in the state, Chief Felix Obuah, was honoured as the “Life Patron of National Network Newspaper” while seven others received various categories of awards during the ceremony.
In his welcome address, the editor-in-chief of the newspaper, Kris Konkwo, said since its inception 18 years ago, the tabloid had been growing from strength to strength.
Konkwo said: “As you ought to know, the journalism profession is fraught with inherent dangers, risks and challenges that only the brave, the courageous, the fearless and the passionate for public interest can dare and survive.
“It is common knowledge that journalism everywhere around the globe is not for the lazy, the feeble-minded, egoistic individuals or those given to egregious breach of protocol.”
Journalism and by extension, newspaper publishing calls for deep intellect, profound knowledge of history, commitment, sound education, appreciable sense of justice, humanitarian spirit, selflessness, etc “
