Community safety advocate, Comrade Austin Emovworho, has called on Nigerians to take responsibility for protecting their neighbourhoods, emphasising that lasting security begins with the people.
In an interview with journalists, Comrade Austin said insecurity remains a major concern in the country and urged local communities not to wait for external interventions.
“Security starts with us,” he declared. “It’s time we stop waiting and start acting.”
He urged traditional rulers, youth leaders, and community influencers to champion vigilance efforts, work closely with security agencies, and create an environment of shared responsibility.
While acknowledging the role of government, Comrade Austin maintained that real security is only possible when communities are empowered to act.
He recommended four key steps to strengthen local safety: Form neighbourhood watch groups and organise regular patrols. Improve intelligence gathering and report suspicious activity promptly. Foster unity and tackle the root causes of crime.
Comrade Austin also outlined the benefits of active community participation in security: reduced crime rates, stronger community ties, improved safety, and better cooperation with law enforcement.
“This is a call to action,” he said. “Let’s come together, reclaim our neighbourhoods, and build a safer Nigeria. Community leaders must rise and lead this charge.”
