Governor Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State has embarked on a transformative journey to make his state financially sustainable while prioritizing the well-being of its residents. Recognizing the agricultural potential of Northern Nigeria, Tambuwal has placed a strong emphasis on the agriculture sector, aiming to ensure food security and economic prosperity. Through strategic initiatives and partnerships, he has revitalized the agricultural industry, benefiting farmers and positioning Sokoto as an agricultural powerhouse.

Governor Tambuwal’s commitment to agriculture is evident in the state’s budget, with a significant portion allocated to the sector. Focusing on farmers’ needs, his administration procured and sold over 9,000 metric tonnes of fertilizers at a subsidized rate, easing the financial burden for farmers. By comparing market prices and providing discounts, Tambuwal demonstrated his dedication to supporting agricultural activities in Sokoto.

Governor Tambuwal understands the importance of industrializing the agricultural sector and attracting private sector investments. His efforts have yielded positive results, such as the establishment of the Dangote Rice Milling Factory and the OCP Morocco Fertilizer Plant in Sokoto. Recognizing the strengths of different regions, Tambuwal urged collaboration among Northern governors to maximize the potential of various cash crops and promote access to finance and infrastructure development.

To achieve agricultural independence, Governor Tambuwal established a technical group led by Chiso Abdullahi Dattijo, with a focus on modernizing agriculture and ensuring food security. The administration distributed enhanced seedlings, farming machinery, and agrochemicals to farmers, complementing their efforts during the rainy season. Additionally, the state-owned Anchor Borrower Programme and partnerships with Flour Mills of Nigeria have provided further support to wheat and rice farmers, enhancing productivity and economic growth.

Governor Tambuwal’s commitment to agriculture extends beyond his term. Collaborating with the African Development Bank, he is spearheading the reconstruction of the Marabawa Irrigation Scheme, a project worth over N3 billion. This initiative aims to increase agricultural output, enhance food security, and boost commercial production capabilities. Furthermore, the Sokoto Cattle Breeding Programme has revolutionized cattle rearing, improving the beef and milk production sector while supporting animal health through the establishment of veterinary clinics and modern abattoirs.
