Taraba Activates Flood Evacuation Plans, Maps Safe Zones

Following the flood predictions by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), the Taraba State Government has activated evacuation and relocation plans for residents of flood prone and riverine communities across the state.

The Executive Secretary of the Taraba State Emergency Management Agency (TSEMA), Dr Echuseh Audu, disclosed this in Jalingo, during the ongoing statewide flood sensitisation campaign across vulnerable communities in the state.

Dr. Audu said, TSEMA had identified and mapped out high grounds and other safe locations to serve as temporary relocation camps for residents who may be displaced by the flood.

She said the measures were part of the state government’s proactive efforts, under Governor Agbu Kefas, to prevent loss of lives and property during the flood season.

According to her, the sensitisation campaign is being conducted in flood-prone communities to ensure that residents are adequately informed about the risks and necessary safety measures.

Dr. Audu, therefore urged residents to heed early warnings from TSEMA and cooperate with emergency officials and community leaders whenever evacuation becomes necessary.

She also advised residents to clear blocked drainages, avoid constructing buildings on waterways and remain prepared to relocate to government-designated safe areas.

The TSEMA boss further urged residents to give priority to the safety of children, elderly persons and people living with disabilities during emergencies.

She, further cautioned members of the public against relying on unverified information, stressing that residents should obtain flood-related updates and advisories only from TSEMA and the Taraba State Government.

Dr. Audu, then said the agency would continue to work with communities and other relevant stakeholders to strengthen preparedness and minimise the impact of flooding across the state.

She reiterated the government’s commitment to protecting lives and property through early warning, community sensitisation, evacuation planning and other emergency response measures.
