The Taraba State Government has strengthened its environmental conservation agenda through a strategic partnership with the Africa Nature Investors (ANI) Foundation. To commemorate Earth Day 2025, the theme is „Our Power, Our Planet.“

According to ANI, the recently signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) focuses on enhancing protection and sustainable management of the expansive Gashaka Gumti National Park, which spans Taraba and Adamawa States.

The day before the signing of the Mou in March 2025, Gautier Mignot, European Union Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, paid a courtesy visit to Governor Agbu Kefas after visiting Gashaka Gumti National Park, which he described as a “jewel of nature” and an excellent asset for Taraba and Adamawa States.
Governor Agbu Kefas emphasised the rich benefits of the initiative, stating: „This partnership demonstrates our commitment to conservation that delivers tangible benefits for our communities.

Gashaka Gumti National Park represents both an ecological treasure and a significant economic asset capable of generating employment and attracting investment to Taraba State.“ He noted how the national park had attracted the attention of the EU to Taraba State and prayed for more of such.

The governor assured the ANI Foundation of his administration’s continued support. He added, “We will work closely with ANI to ensure that the park is effectively managed and that the conservation benefits are shared equitably among our communities.”

ANI Foundation‘s Executive Director, Tunde Morakinyo, commended the state government‘s vision: „Our collaboration will ensure the park becomes a model for sustainable development, balancing ecological preservation with economic progress.“ The MoU positions Taraba State at the forefront of Nigeria‘s conservation efforts, showcasing how environmental protection can drive sustainable development.
