Taraba State governor, Agbu Kefas, has announced that he will formally defect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Wednesday, November 19, 2025.
Governor Kefas’ defection will mark yet another high-profile defection from the opposition party in recent months.
The Taraba State governor made the disclosure while speaking to journalists during an inspection of the ongoing renovation works at the Jolly Nyame Stadium in Jalingo, on Saturday.
According to him, the decision to leave the PDP was driven by a desire to secure the future and development of Taraba State and not out of personal ambition.
“On the 19th of November, I will officially transition from PDP to APC. This movement is about the destiny of the people of Taraba, and we are expecting many visitors for the ceremony,” he said.
When asked whether his planned defection came with conditions or demands from the ruling party, the governor declined to give details, noting that all would be made clear during the formal declaration ceremony.
“My speech at the event will clarify the circumstances and allow residents to judge for themselves,” Kefas added.
Political observers said Kefas’s planned move underscores the deepening crisis within the PDP, which has in recent weeks suffered a series of major defections by serving governors across the South-South and South-East regions.
Recall that earlier in November, Bayelsa State governor, Senator Douye Diri dumped the PDP for the APC, ending weeks of speculations and signaling a major political realignment in the region.
Diri’s defection followed similar moves by Delta State governor, Sheriff Oborevwori; Akwa Ibom’s Umo Eno, and Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah, all of whom joined the APC earlier in the year.
With Kefas’s expected defection, the APC will now control 25 states across Nigeria, further consolidating its dominance ahead of the next election cycle.
The Taraba governor’s decision also came amid growing tensions in the PDP following the party’s expulsion of several senior members, including the Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike; former Ekiti State governor, Ayodele Fayose; and Senator Samuel Anyanwu, at the party’s national convention in Ibadan, Oyo State capital.
