The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has commenced urgent rehabilitation works on Towers J4 and N9 to N12 along the Ikot Abasi–Eket 132kV double-circuit transmission line in Akwa Ibom State.
The TCN management said on Monday, the intervention followed the recent vandalism of the transmission towers, which threatened the integrity of the power infrastructure along the line.
During a site inspection on Friday,, the regional manager, Port Harcourt Transmission Region, Nasir Bello, represented by the assistant general manager, Transmission, Dr Ubani Raymond, said the inspection was conducted to ensure compliance with engineering specifications.
He added that the exercise would also enable the project team to make immediate adjustments where necessary.
Raymond said significant progress had been made on the rehabilitation works, noting that the vandalised towers had been completely dismantled while their bases had been solidly recast.
He urged residents of Ikot Abasi to remain vigilant and protect critical power infrastructure in their communities from criminal elements.
The head of Lines, Port Harcourt Transmission Region, Azuh Lucky, stressed the need for rigorous monitoring to ensure that the rehabilitation works complied with engineering standards and met the required quality.
Lucky commended the TCN management for engaging two contractors to accelerate the execution of the project. However, he said the difficult terrain and persistent rainfall had affected the pace of work.
Similarly, the principal manager, Uyo Work Centre, Eguaikhide Clement, expressed satisfaction with the progress of the rehabilitation works.
He commended the contractors for their commitment and understanding of the urgency of completing the project.
