Tenant Dies During Rent Payment Quarrel In Oyo

A dispute over payment or rent turned deadly, resulting in the death of a tenant simply identified as Olayeni, in Oriyangi area of Ibadan, Oyo State capital.

According to a release by the the Oyo State Police Command on its official X handle on Sunday, the sad incident occurred on Wednesday, September 3, 2025.

The statement explained that the unnamed landlord had invited a friend to intervene during the confrontation with the deceased.

However, rather than douse the tension, the situation turned violent leading to the friend hitting the tenant from which he suddenly collapsed.

“On September 3, 2025, a tragic event in Ibadan’s Oriyangi area resulted in a tenant’s death after a dispute with his landlord over rent payments.

“During the altercation, the landlord’s associate allegedly struck the tenant, Olayeni, leading to his collapse.

“Emergency responders arrived promptly, but unfortunately, he was pronounced dead at the hospital,” the statement said.

Police disclosed that both the landlord and his friend have been arrested and were currently undergoing thorough investigation.

“The suspects have been arrested, and a thorough investigation is underway,” the statement said.

The Oyo State Police Command expressed condolences to the victim’s family and assured that justice will be served.
