Gunmen early yesterday attacked the residence of  INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner  in Lokoja, Kogi State.

The chief press secretary to the INEC chairman, Mr Rotimi Oyekanmi, said in a statement;

“The armed men engaged the security personnel in a gun battle for over 30 minutes until reinforcement arrived.” He said while no life was lost.

A team of combined security personnel was  later deployed to protect the residence.

“The incident occurred a day after a mob besieged our state office,” INEC said as it

urged thorough investigation into the incident and called for enhanced security to prevent reoccurrence.

Reacting, the Kogi State All Progressives Congress governorship campaign council called on the police, Department of State Services and other security agencies to check what it described as the slide to anarchy in the state by arresting the governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party, Muritala Yakubu Ajaka and his supporters who allegedly masterminded the attack.

It said the attack came days after it alerted the nation on plans by SDP thugs to attack INEC.

The council’s director of media and publicity, Kingsley Fanwo, said yesterday; “The same arsonists also had an attempt to burn the Kogi State Government House foiled by our eagle-eyed security agents. The same attempt was foiled at the state APC Secretariat in Lokoja.”

According to the APC, the SDP in the state and their collaborators are desperate to destroy some documents in INEC to cover the heist they committed in Kogi East where they allegedly killed APC supporters and drove them out of collation centres to forge the results that were eventually trumped by the massive votes for the governor-elect.
