The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) led by Kabiru Tanimu Turaki has said there is no national convention scheduled by the party this weekend.
The National Publicity Secretary of the Turaki led PDP Comrade, Ini Ememobong, said this after the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the faction.
The Nyesom Wike camp has perfected plans to hold its national convention on Sunday in Abuja.
The declaration comes amid reconciliation talks between the Wike-backed faction and the Turaki camp.
Speaking after the meeting, Ememobong dismissed speculations about an imminent convention, noting that such claims are not within the knowledge of the party leadership at this time.
“Talking about the convention, there’s no convention coming up to our knowledge,” he said, adding that the party would not publicly dwell on internal disagreements. “We will not begin to deconstruct that because that would be an inconvenient truth, and we cannot be saying those inconvenient truths at these points in public.”
He likened the ongoing internal situation to a domestic dispute that requires careful handling rather than public confrontation. According to him, restraint shown by the party reflects a deliberate effort to preserve unity and avoid escalation.
Ememobong emphasized that discussions are ongoing within the party, with a strong preference for reconciliation over conflict. He warned against what he described as “mutually assured destruction,” stressing that unresolved disputes could create uncertainty for candidates preparing for elections.
“Except we come to a point of agreement, people running for elections will not be sure of the platforms they are running with. And that is what we want to avoid,” he said.
The PDP spokesperson maintained that the party remains open to dialogue and compromise, noting that negotiations often involve adjusting initial demands to reach a workable agreement.
“We are open to peace. Discussions are ongoing… what you leave the house with is usually not what you go back with. So it is the zone of possible agreement where parties would say this works,” he added.
He concluded that efforts toward consensus are still within the available timeframe, expressing hope that the party would ultimately arrive at a unified position that provides a stable platform for its members ahead of future elections.
End.
