Over time, dates, well-known as “dabino” in Northern Nigeria, have many dimensions.

As sweet fruits from the date palm tree (Phoenix dactylifera), they have become common in the country. Although they are generally found in the northern part of Nigeria, dates have penetrated markets nationwide, especially during festive periods such as Ramadan when demand peaks.

According to The Guardian, dates are consumed in various forms—fresh, dried, or blended into drinks and desserts. Many households incorporate them into meals, while others eat them as snacks due to their natural sweetness and energy-boosting properties. They are also used as natural sweeteners in place of refined sugar in beverages and baked foods.

According to the report, nutritionally, dates are regarded as a powerhouse. They are rich in carbohydrates, fibre, vitamins A, B, and C, and essential minerals such as iron, calcium, potassium, and magnesium.

“Their high fibre content aids digestion and helps prevent constipation, while their natural sugars provide instant energy. Regular consumption has also been linked to improved heart health, reduced cholesterol levels, and strengthened immunity due to its antioxidant properties. “Beyond their nutritional value, dates hold deep spiritual and cultural significance. In Islam, they are traditionally used to break the fast at Ramadan, symbolising purity, nourishment, and gratitude.

“This practice reflects both religious teachings and the fruit’s ability to quickly restore energy after fasting.  In many cultures, dates are also seen as symbols of abundance, healing and communal unity, often shared during religious and social gatherings,” it said.

As awareness of healthy eating grows in Nigeria, dates continue to gain popularity as an affordable, natural, and nutritious food. Their combination of health benefits and cultural importance makes them not just a fruit, but a valuable part of daily life and tradition.
