Among the Bini people of Edo State, marriage is used to promote tradition, family values and social order. It goes beyond a relationship between a man and a woman.

It is a bond between two families, often marked by elaborate rites and communal participation.

The marriage process begins with an introduction, known locally as “Ivbuomo,” where the groom’s family formally visits the bride’s family to declare their intentions. This step is crucial because it establishes mutual consent between the two families.

Following this is the inquiry stage, during which the groom’s family discreetly investigates the bride’s background, character, and lineage to ensure compatibility and good standing.

One of the most significant stages is the payment of the bride price, referred to as “Erhunmwun.” Contrary to misconceptions, this is not seen as buying the bride but rather as a symbolic gesture of appreciation to her family for raising her. Items presented often include kola nuts, drinks, clothing and sometimes money, depending on family expectations and social status.

The traditional wedding ceremony is usually colourful and festive, attracting extended family members, friends and well-wishers. The bride is adorned in rich attire, often coral beads and intricately designed wrappers, symbolising purity and pride in her heritage.

A key moment during the ceremony is when the bride publicly identifies the groom among a group of men, affirming her choice before witnesses.

Respect for elders and ancestral customs plays a central role throughout the marriage process.

Prayers and blessings are offered to ensure fertility, prosperity and harmony in the union. In many cases, marriages are expected to be enduring, with divorce traditionally discouraged and resolved through family mediation when conflicts arise.

In contemporary times, while Western influences and religious practices have modified some aspects of Bini marriage, many families still uphold the core traditions. The blending of modern and traditional elements has allowed the institution to remain relevant, preserving cultural identity while adapting to changing social realities.
