President Bola Tinubu has celebrated ‘Super Permanent Secretary’, Owelle Gilbert Chikelu on the occasion of his 95th birthday, describing his life as one that embodies integrity, patriotism and service to humanity.
In a statement he personally signed on Saturday, the President said Chikelu’s 95-year journey “has been filled with profound testimonies, impact on humanity, and selfless service to our beloved country.”
Tinubu, who referred to the nonagenarian as a friend of many decades, praised his contributions to Nigeria’s progress across both the public and private sectors.
He said Chikelu’s career as a top civil servant reflected “excellence, integrity, and service to humanity,” particularly in the ministries of Mines and Power, Economic Development and National Planning, Employment and Labour, and Petroleum Resources.
“As Permanent Secretary, ‘Super Permanent Secretary’ as fondly called, you distinguished yourself in the ministries and several departments you served,” Tinubu said, noting that many of the initiatives introduced under his stewardship continue to shape public service delivery.
The President also highlighted the significance of Chikelu’s biography, “Owelle: The GPO Chikelu Story,” authored by historian Nze Ed Keazor, which was publicly presented in London on Saturday to coincide with the milestone celebration.
He described the work as “a gift to the public and to political office holders, offering invaluable lessons on integrity, accountability, and patriotism.”
“Today, our nation faces enormous challenges. It is my earnest prayer that your story will continue to serve as a beacon for all who aspire to serve with honour, responsibility, and accountability,” the President said.
Tinubu further extended his admiration and prayers, congratulating Chikelu on attaining the age of 95, and hailed his decorated honours as Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON), Owelle of Ichida, Owelle of Anaocha, and Knight of St. Paul of the Anglican Communion.
“Happy 95th birthday,” Tinubu concluded, “I celebrate you with great admiration, trusting that your story will continue to inspire generations.”
