In commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the University of Calabar (UNICAL) , President Bola Tinubu has commissioned capital projects worth N2.2 billion constructed by the management of the university.
A breakdown of the commissioned projects as stated by the vice chancellor, Prof Florence Obi, include Hall of Fame named after one of the past erudite professors of the school, Prof Ayondele, constructed at the sum of N825 million from the 2023/2024 merged TETFund intervention.
Others are Faculty of Engineering completed at N1.6 million with funds from capital appropriation, Pharmacy and Administration Block completed at the cost of N4.8 million while the fire service station structure was constructed at the sum of N1.84 million with merged TETFund annual intervention fund.
Also commissioned by the president is the completed Faculty of Education building constructed at the cost of N3.78 million.
President Bola Tinubu, represented by the executive secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), Prof Abdullahi Ribadu, lauded the vice chancellor for the giant strides, describing the beautiful edifices completed by the VC as massive building projects that could stand the test of time.
In a brief interview with the representative of the president, Ribadu said, “We hope to see more massive buildings like these before the tenure of the VC elapses by the end of this year.
“Some were abandoned for decades with others constructed within seven months. This is a great achievement by the incumbent vice chancellor and her management team. We hope to see more of this once another intervention is given to the team for the year.”
The abandoned projects completed by the administration of Prof Florence Obi will add value to the institution as most teaching and non-teaching staff who lacked office accommodation will now be allocated offices by the management of the institution.
