President Bola Tinubu-led administration is committed to supporting free and responsible journalism in Nigeria.

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammad Idris, disclosed this on Wednesday in Abuja during a public presentation of a book, ‘Writing for Media and Monetising It’, authored by senior vice chairman/editor-in-chief of LEADERSHIP Media Group, Azubuike Ishiekwene.

Idris, who was the chairman of the occasion, said: “As we celebrate this milestone, it is also important to reaffirm the commitment of the Tinubu administration to a free and responsible journalism.

“We understand that a society can only flourish when its media organs are free to report the truth without fear of retribution and to equally hold those in authority accountable.”

He praised Ishiekwene as a writer, editor, administrator, publisher, mentor, and role model, noting his current role as Senior Vice Chairman and Editor-in-Chief of the LEADERSHIP Media Group.

Idris lauded the book, describing it as an industry classic that bridges the gap between practice and entrepreneurship in the media sector.

He noted that the book will be beneficial to a wide range of readers, including young and old, freelance, or full-time journalists.

The Minister also commended Ishiekwene for gathering a stellar group of media veterans, publishers, editors, academics, and the next generation of journalists for the book launch.

Idris further described Ishiekwene as a multifaceted industry leader who has led large media organisations, participated in industry bodies, judged prestigious media competitions, and trained young practitioners.

He emphasised that Ishiekwene’s primary passion remains writing, shaping public discourse with insight and illumination for over three decades.

The minister also acknowledged the enthusiastic reception of ‘Writing for Media and Monetising It’ and its effective marketing campaign, which leverages digital and social media, and e-commerce.

He noted Ishiekwene’s recent launch of a dedicated website for the book and a personal website showcasing his columns, lectures, and professional life.

Idris underscored the importance of a free press as the cornerstone of democracy, emphasising that a society thrives when its media can report the truth without fear and hold those in power accountable.

He stressed the need for journalists to exercise their freedom responsibly, with a commitment to accuracy, balance, and ethical standards.

The Information Minister, therefore, reiterated the Tinubu administration’s dedication to creating an environment where journalists can work freely and responsibly, promoting national unity and good governance.
