The Nigeria Citizens Watch for Good Governance (NCWGG) has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for approving the expansion of the Nigerian Army from its existing structure to 12 divisions, alongside the recruitment of 28,000 additional personnel.

The group said the move was a major step towards strengthening Nigeria’s security architecture and improving the armed forces’ capacity to tackle emerging security challenges nationwide.

In a press statement signed by its director of Communications, Igwe Ude-Umanta, NCWGG said the decision represented a historic and strategic masterstroke that will redefine the nation’s security landscape for generations.

The group noted that the development reflects the administration’s commitment to prioritising national security under the Renewed Hope Agenda.

“President Tinubu has once again demonstrated that the Renewed Hope Agenda is not a slogan. It is the fuel, the gear and the driving force behind efforts to transform key sectors of the country, with security occupying a central position,” the statement said.

It added that the approval aligned with the constitutional responsibility of the government to protect citizens, referencing Section 14(2)(b) of the 1999 Constitution, which states that the security and welfare of the people shall be the primary purpose of government.

The organisation further said the army’s expansion and recruitment exercise was a game-changer that would boost the morale of troops currently engaged in operations against terrorism, banditry and other forms of criminality.

“For our gallant troops who fight day and night and confront threats across the country, this expansion sends a clear message that the nation recognises their sacrifices and is committed to providing the support they need,” it added.

The group also praised the leadership of the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Ibrahim Shuaibu, and the Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Olatubosun Oluyede, for their roles in strengthening Nigeria’s security operations.

According to NCWGG, the two military chiefs have demonstrated professional leadership and contributed to the ongoing reforms within the armed forces.

“This historic milestone is being achieved under the command of two distinguished officers whose vision, dedication and commitment have helped reposition Nigeria’s security architecture,” the statement said.

The organisation further pointed to recent security successes, including the rescue of 44 schoolchildren and their teachers in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, as evidence of the military’s improved intelligence gathering and operational effectiveness
