A former two-time member of the National Assembly, Senator Dino Melaye, has accused President Bola Tinubu of displaying totalitarian tendencies, alleging undue interference in the functions of the nation’s judicial arm.

Melaye, a former member of the House of Representatives, made the remarks during an appearance on the ‘MIC On’ Podcast hosted by broadcaster Seun Okinbaloye, which aired on Saturday.

He alleged that President Tinubu was encroaching on the responsibilities of the judiciary.

“Tinubu is a totalitarian, that is why he is taking over the responsibilities of the judiciary. He is not a court of law to declare who is illegal or not,” he added, apparently reacting to Tinubu’s recent comment on the opposition African Democratic Congress (ADC) leadership crisis.

On the controversy surrounding the ADC’s national convention, Melaye defended the party’s actions, insisting that they were in line with subsisting court directives.

“Very well so, because we are maintaining the court order that says ‘status quo’ should be maintained. There was no consequential order asking us not to conduct our congresses that were already ongoing,” the former Kogi West Senator stated.

According to him, the ADC remained committed to asserting the rights of Nigerians and challenging what he described as executive overreach.

“We (ADC) are going to assert our rights, we are going to prove to Tinubu and the government that government is not owned by the people in government, government is owned by the people and the ultimate power of the government is the people,” Melaye said.
