The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, has that said President Bola Tinubu was taking concrete steps to address long-standing challenges in the Niger Delta region through strategic projects and appointments.

Akume stated this when a delegation of the Niger Delta Ethnic Nationalities Youth Leaders Forum, led by the President of the Ijaw Youth Council Worldwide, Sir Jonathan Lokpobiri, paid him a courtesy visit in Abuja on Wednesday.

According to the SGF, in a statement by the director of information in the Office of SGF, Segun Imohiosen, the Tinubu-led administration has demonstrated commitment to the region’s welfare through initiatives such as the establishment of the University of Environmental Technology in Ogoniland to tackle ecological challenges, as well as the appointment of Niger Delta indigenes into key national positions.

He acknowledged the efforts of past administrations in setting up interventionist bodies like the Ministry of Niger Delta, the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), and the Amnesty Programme, but stressed that Tinubu was building on these legacies while pushing further reforms.

“President Tinubu is doing everything possible to resuscitate the country’s indigenous refineries as part of measures to boost economic development, create jobs, and reduce hardship across the federation, including the Niger Delta,” Akume said.

The SGF also praised the Forum for pledging grassroots mobilisation in support of the President’s re-election bid in 2027, describing zoning and power rotation as critical to fostering national unity, stability, and inclusion in Nigeria’s political system.

Earlier, the chairman of the Forum and President of the Ijaw Youth Council Worldwide, Lokpobiri, commended Tinubu for his swift intervention in the Rivers State political crisis, saying the President’s action restored peace and stability to the state.

He further expressed appreciation for the Presidential Amnesty Programme (PAP), noting that it had empowered many Niger Delta youths even as Lokpobiri assured that the region would continue to rally behind the Renewed Hope Agenda to ensure sustainable development.
