Tinubu’s Attempt To Turn Kano to One-party State Will Fail — Yakasai

A former PRP gubernatorial candidate in Kano State in the 2023 elections, Salihu Tanko Yakasai, has accused President Bola Tinubu of attempting to turn Kano State into a one-party state, describing the idea as a major miscalculation.

Yakasai, who previously served as a media aide to former All Progressives Congress (APC) national chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, recently resigned from his position and quit the APC to join the African Democratic Congress (ADC), citing dissatisfaction with what he described as the style of governance under Tinubu’s leadership.

In a post shared on his Facebook page on Wednesday, April 1, 2026, Yakasai said Kano’s political history shows that from the era of the defunct Northern Elements Progressive Union (NEPU) to the period known as “Santsi da Tabo,” the state has never been under a one-party system, and that it was unlikely to change.

He added, “Kano is not Lagos,”

He explained that Kano’s politics is rooted in public interest, truth, and ideological commitment—values established by the late Aminu Kano. According to him, opposition in Kano is not for its own sake, but to ensure societal progress, good governance, justice, and accountability.

Yakasai also expressed concern over what he described as the neglect of complaints from Kano State people, particularly allegations of lopsided government appointments and the prioritisation of certain regions in development projects. He argued that such actions would not attract public support.

He emphasised that loyalty to leadership is earned through fairness and good governance, not through coercion, political manipulation, or deception.

In conclusion, he warned that if Kano continued to be denied its rightful development, its people would respond through the ballot box in 2027 polls.

He ended with the remark, “Single term only (F1),” suggesting a change of government both at Kano State level and the centre in 2027 elections.
