The chairman of the Senate Inter-Parliamentary Committee, Senator Jimoh Ibrahim, has emphasised that President Bola Tinubu’s respect for national sovereignty significantly enhances the effectiveness of Nigeria’s foreign policy, particularly during these challenging times.
Speaking at the 150th session of the General Assembly of the World Parliament Standing Committee on Peace and International Security in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, Senator Ibrahim, who represents Ondo South, highlighted President Tinubu’s dedication to collaboration and cooperation in governance.
He elaborated on how the strong relationship between the executive branch and the Nigerian Parliament helps reduce internal conflicts within the government.
He cited Niger Republic as a notable example, where President Tinubu prioritised national interest above all else in the face of provocation while leading ECOWAS.
President Tinubu, he said, combines this leadership quality with a strong commitment to liberalism and the promotion of peaceful democratic relations among nations.
Senator Ibrahim also noted that the separation of powers is not entirely absolute in a geocentric governance model, using Britain as a prime example.
“Sovereignty is not hypocritical,” he said. “No nation can be fully sovereign because no country has complete control over everything — not even the regulation of emails. However, mutual respect is essential for building democracy. Through incorporation and collaboration, we can develop.”
He added that President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda signifies a unified effort by all three branches of government to work together in establishing effective governance.
“Given that we are not in a conflict zone, there is no justification for any disagreement between these branches of government,” he stated.
To foster democratic goodwill and eliminate poverty, Senator Ibrahim said President Tinubu’s reforms were designed to address the interconnected challenges that hinder harmony among government officials and policies.
