The Presidency has said President Bola Tinubu’s ongoing state visit to Türkiye was a strategic and highly consequential engagement, dismissing claims that it was a routine foreign trip.
The Special Adviser to the President on Policy Communication, Mr. Daniel Bwala, stated this while speaking with State House Correspondents on the sidelines of the visit, noting that the trip was undertaken at the invitation of the Turkish government.
According to Bwala, the invitation reflects Nigeria’s growing influence under President Tinubu’s leadership, both within Africa and on the global stage.
He explained that President Tinubu’s standing as a former leader within the ECOWAS bloc, as well as Nigeria’s strategic relevance on the continent, informed the high-level reception and expectations surrounding the visit.
Bwala stressed that the visit should not be viewed as ceremonial, describing it instead as a mission-driven engagement aimed at advancing Nigeria’s national interests.
“This is not another trip. It is a strategic trip. First of all, it is an invitation by this government. The President of Nigeria is a former leader of ECOWAS and a person of influence in Africa. Nigeria also has a strong force in Africa, and with the breakthroughs we are having in the economy, security, politics and other areas, the President is here for a state visit,” he said.
He disclosed that the visit would formally commence with a series of engagements beginning from Tuesday, during which Nigeria and Türkiye would explore areas of mutual interest, particularly in defence, security, and economic cooperation.
Bwala said key Nigerian ministers accompanying the President were scheduled to hold bilateral meetings with their Turkish counterparts to deepen collaboration across critical sectors.
Highlighting President Tinubu’s international standing, the presidential aide said the President’s leadership style and personality have strengthened Nigeria’s diplomatic relations globally, including renewed engagements with major partners such as the United States following earlier diplomatic challenges.
He pointed to Nigeria’s recent engagements with the United Arab Emirates as evidence of renewed diplomatic momentum, adding that the Türkiye visit builds on those gains.
Bwala also underscored Türkiye’s long-established strengths in defence and security, particularly its capacity to manufacture advanced military hardware relevant to Nigeria’s security needs.
“The President is a very influential leader that world leaders know. Our relationship with the U.S. is tied to the personality and leadership the President brings on board. We just concluded engagements with the United Arab Emirates, and now with the government and people of Türkiye. Historically, they are strong in the area of security and have the capacity to produce weapons critical to what we need. We also have areas where Nigeria has been of help to them,” he said.
He noted that Nigeria and Türkiye have enjoyed long-standing economic and investment ties, marked by Turkish investments in Nigeria and reciprocal contributions by Nigerians and the Nigerian government to Türkiye over the years.
Describing the visit as a meeting of shared interests, Bwala said it is mutually beneficial, adding that Turkish officials and citizens have shown clear excitement and optimism about the outcomes of the bilateral discussions.
He assured that details of the agreements and specific deliverables expected from the visit would be communicated at the conclusion of the talks.
President Tinubu’s state visit to Türkiye is aimed at consolidating Nigeria’s foreign policy objectives, strengthening defence cooperation, and unlocking new economic opportunities in line with the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda, the Presidency said.
