Trade Facilitation: Relief For Importers As Bonded Warehouse Begins Operation In Abuja

Importers and businesses in Abuja and Northern Nigeria are expected to benefit from improved cargo access and more efficient logistics as a new customs-controlled bonded warehouse in Kuje, Abuja, brings cargo storage, processing and clearance closer to their markets.

The facility, operated by TRÏNŪ Bonded Warehouse, a subsidiary of Sirlyon Limited, is designed to ease the logistical burden of moving imported goods from seaports to their final destinations by allowing cargo to be transported under Customs bond to Abuja for storage, processing and clearance.

With a capacity of about 700 containers, the facility is expected to provide businesses with an additional option for managing imported cargo inland, potentially reducing the time and logistical expenses associated with accessing port-based services.

The development also expands the infrastructure available to importers outside Nigeria’s coastal commercial centres, providing businesses in the nation’s capital and the wider Northern market with access to bonded storage and customs clearance services closer to where their goods are needed.

The facility offers container and general cargo storage, customs documentation and clearance support, cargo handling and consolidation, weighbridge services, as well as on-site office accommodation for the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) and other regulatory agencies.

Speaking at the commissioning, the Chief Executive Officer of TRÏNŪ Bonded Warehouse, Bilal Ajijola, said the facility was established to address the challenges businesses face when their cargo must be processed far from its final destination.

“TRÏNŪ was built around a simple observation: businesses shouldn’t have to keep moving back and forth to where their cargo isn’t ultimately going,” Ajijola said.

“By creating a secure, customs-controlled facility in Abuja, we’re bringing more of that process closer to where the goods are actually needed. You store, process and clear your cargo closer to its destination.”

The commissioning comes amid the Federal Government’s efforts to modernise customs operations and improve trade facilitation through digital platforms and expanded logistics infrastructure.

The Nigeria Customs Service’s B’Odogwu platform, implemented through a public-private partnership, forms part of the modernisation drive, while privately operated bonded warehouses such as TRÏNŪ extend customs-controlled cargo services beyond the seaports.

By providing an inland location for cargo storage and clearance, the Kuje facility is positioned to support businesses seeking more convenient access to customs services and improve the movement of imported goods into Abuja and Northern Nigeria.

Ajijola said the company’s ambition was to establish the facility as a strategic inland gateway connecting businesses in the region to international markets.

“Our ambition is to build more than a warehouse,” he said. “We want TRÏNŪ to become an important inland gateway for trade into Abuja and Northern Nigeria, connecting businesses to global markets while making the movement of goods more efficient, secure and accessible.”

The company said the Abuja facility forms part of a broader plan to develop bonded warehousing and inland logistics infrastructure across Nigeria, with the aim of improving cargo movement and expanding access to trade-related services beyond the country’s seaports.
