Gunmen have reportedly invaded Olegabulu village in Agatu local government area of Benue State murdering a traditional ruler of the community, his wife, and three other residents.
LEADERSHIP learnt that incident occurred in the late hours of Thursday when assailants launched the attack on the community.
It gathered that some residents the community were injured and were taken to hospital for urgent medical treatment.
The chairman of Agatu Local Government Area, Melvin Ejeh, who confirmed the incident but did not state the casualty figures condemned the incident, “Security agencies have been mobilised, and investigations are ongoing to identify and apprehend those responsible for this heinous act,” Ejeh said.
The member representing Apa/Agatu Federal Constituency and chairman, House Committee on National Inland Waterways, Ojotu Ojema, has condemned the attack on Olegabulu Community.
Ojema stated that among those tragically killed were “the traditional ruler of Olegabulu, His Royal Highness, Chief Momo Alexander Awodi, his wife, Abigail Awodi and others”
The statement issued by the media aide to House of Representatives member, Apa/Agatu Federal Constituency, Olikita Ekani, on Friday, Ojema said, their death was a painful loss to their immediate families, entire people of the Federal Constituency and a grievous blow to the peace and stability of the community.
Ojema described the attack as barbaric, senseless and unacceptable, stressing that no society can thrive under the persistent threat of violence and impunity.
He extended his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and the people of Olegabulu, assuring them of his unwavering solidarity during this difficult time.
The lawmaker called on security agencies to act swiftly in apprehending the perpetrators and ensuring that justice is served without delay.
He further urged the federal government to intensify efforts toward strengthening security architecture in rural communities, particularly in areas that have become recurring targets of such attacks.
Ojema reaffirmed his commitment to working closely with relevant authorities to ensure the protection of lives and property across Apa/Agatu Federal Constituency.
He emphasised that the safety and well-being of his constituents remain his top priority and called for collective vigilance and cooperation among community members and security agencies.
Ojema also appealed for calm, urging residents not to resort to self-help but to continue to support lawful measures aimed at restoring lasting peace in the area.
Meanwhile, Benue State Police Command’s spokesperson, DSP Edet Udeme, when contacted on telephone said, “I will get back to you when I have details of the incident.”
