Troops of the Nigerian Army have rescued three women abducted in Sakaba Local Government Area of Kebbi State following an exchange of gunfire with their captors.
The rescue was confirmed on Sunday by the Spokesman of Sector 2, Operation Fansan Yamma, Lt. Col. Olaniyi Osoba.
Osoba identified the rescued women as Aisha Aminu, Sumayya Aminu and Nana Abbas, saying they were freed after troops engaged the abductors in a gun battle.
He said the victims were subsequently handed over to the District Head of Dirindaji, Usman Mohammed, and the chairman of Sakaba Local Government Area.
The military spokesman said the operation took place amid persistent security concerns in communities across Kebbi State.
In a related development, suspected bandits have reportedly attacked communities in Shanga and Ngaski local government areas of the state, killing five residents and abducting scores of people.
However, the police had yet to confirm the reported attacks as of the time of filing this report.
Efforts by our correspondent to obtain confirmation from the Kebbi State Police Command spokesman, SP Bashir Usman, were unsuccessful, as he did not answer repeated calls on Sunday or return them.
A resident of the affected area, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said he was unaware of the incident.
The Director of Security at the Cabinet Office in Birnin Kebbi, Abdulrahman Zagga, could also not be reached, as his telephone lines were switched off.
