Troost-Ekong Calls for Long-Term Reform After World Cup Failure

Former Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has urged the Nigeria Football Federation to adopt a long-term development strategy following Super Eagleas’ failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Nigeria’s hopes were dashed after a penalty shootout defeat to DR Congo in the African play-off final, marking a second consecutive World Cup absence.

Troost-Ekong admitted the disappointment runs deep but stressed the need for structural reform rather than reliance on talent alone.

“It’s a tough place to be,” he said. “We’ve now missed out twice, and that demands serious reflection. Nations that succeed consistently build for 10 to 15 years with clear structures in place.”

He also praised coach Éric Chelle for stabilising the team amid a turbulent period, but warned that lasting success will depend on long-term vision and planning.

“I think the coach, Eric Chelle, has done a fantastic job turning around a difficult start because there was upheaval from the moment he took the job.

“There will be changes again. I have also retired from international football, and it was a World Cup I wanted to be part of. In moments like this, we have to take a serious look at the structure we have in place to prepare for long-term success.

“When you look at nations that have done well from the continent, they have put the right structures in place for 10 to 15 years, rather than relying solely on talent. We need a clear long-term vision.”

Former Nigeria captain, who led the Super Eagles to the 2024 AFCON final, winning tournament MVP in the process, announced his international retirement just before the AFCON kicked off.
