U.S. President Donald Trump has said Israel will not carry out further strikes on Iran’s major gas facility, even as he warned Tehran of severe consequences if attacks on Gulf energy sites continue.
Trump’s remarks followed rising tensions in the Middle East after strikes on key energy infrastructure heightened fears of disruptions to global oil supply, with crude prices reportedly surging by about five per cent.
“No more attacks will be made by Israel pertaining to this extremely important and valuable South Pars Field unless Iran unwisely decides to attack a very innocent, in this case, Qatar,” he said.
The escalation came amid a series of retaliatory attacks by Iran on Gulf energy installations, including Qatar’s Ras Laffan LNG facility, after Israel struck Iran’s South Pars Gas Field—part of the world’s largest natural gas reserve.
In a post on social media, Trump called for an immediate halt to attacks on both Iranian and Qatari energy infrastructure, stating that Washington had no prior knowledge of Israel’s strike.
He, however, issued a stark warning to Tehran, saying the United States would respond forcefully if Iran failed to de-escalate.
“In which instance the United States of America, with or without the help or consent of Israel, will massively blow up the entirety of the South Pars Gas Field at an amount of strength and power that Iran has never seen or witnessed before,” Trump added.
The U.S. president had earlier described Israel’s strike as a reaction to escalating tensions in the region, noting that Iran responded by targeting energy facilities in Qatar and threatening broader attacks across the Gulf, including Saudi Arabia.
While Trump maintained that the U.S. was not involved in the initial strike, reports by The Wall Street Journal suggested he may have approved Israel’s plan to target the gas facility.
