US President Donald Trump has called for artificial intelligence to be referred to as “super intelligence” in US government documents, introducing a new term for the technology during his address to the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
Trump made the announcement on Tuesday, September 22, arguing that the word “artificial” makes the technology sound less powerful than it is.
“From this point forward, all of the United States’ documents — and hopefully the world’s — will be changed to use the much more accurate term ‘super’ as opposed to artificial,” Trump told world leaders.
He described the proposed terminology as “super intelligence” and abbreviated it as “S.I.”
Trump Rejects Push For Tighter AI Controls
The announcement came as Trump used his UN speech to reiterate his opposition to international efforts to impose new controls on AI.
He said the US would reject what he called a “globalist scheme” to control the technology and argued that the country should continue developing AI rather than restricting its growth.
Trump also presented the development of advanced AI as a strategic competition involving China, saying the country that wins the race will have a significant advantage.
New Name Has A Different Meaning In AI
The phrase “superintelligence” already has a meaning within discussions about advanced AI. It generally refers to a hypothetical form of machine intelligence that would surpass human capabilities across a broad range of tasks.
Trump’s proposed use of “super intelligence” therefore goes beyond simply replacing one abbreviation with another, although it remains unclear how extensively the terminology will be adopted across the US government.
His comments came amid a wider international debate over AI safety and regulation. At the same UN gathering, other world leaders and UN officials called for greater international cooperation and safeguards as the technology develops.
Trump, meanwhile, argued that the US should maintain its lead in AI development while continuing to pursue what he described as the technology’s enormous economic and strategic potential.
