United States President Donald Trump joked about seeking another term in office, drawing laughter from guests at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner after unveiling a red “Trump 2028” cap despite the constitutional two-term limit for U.S. presidents.

Speaking at the annual event in Washington, Trump mixed humour with criticism of the media as he addressed journalists, government officials and invited guests.

In one of the highlights of his speech, the president jokingly suggested he intended to remain in office beyond the constitutional limit.

“To show just how much I care about the press and I want to save your ratings, I’m pleased to announce my intention to, and this is somewhat of a scoop, my intention to run for a fourth term as president of the United States,” Trump said before pulling out a red “Trump 2028” cap and wearing it.

The remark drew laughter from the audience, although the U.S. Constitution’s 22nd Amendment limits presidents to serving a maximum of two elected terms.

The White House Correspondents’ Dinner, an annual event celebrating press freedom and journalism, had been postponed earlier this year following the alleged assassination attempt on Trump in April.

Friday’s gathering also marked Trump’s first appearance at the correspondents’ dinner after years of skipping the event during his previous presidency and political campaigns.

Throughout his address, Trump continued his long-running criticism of the media while delivering several light-hearted jokes aimed at reporters.

Addressing journalists in attendance, he said:

“I know it was not easy finding shoes to go along with your bulletproof vest, which many people didn’t want to wear because they’d rather die than look 20 pounds heavier.”

The president’s remarks generated laughter from the audience as he blended political satire with familiar criticism of what he has repeatedly described as the “fake news media.”
