Trump Orders Review Of Childhood Vaccine Spacing

United States President Donald Trump has signed an executive order calling for revised childhood vaccine recommendations, including a proposal to administer routine childhood immunisations at separate medical appointments where possible.

The order also directed the US Department of Health and Human Services to strengthen vaccine research and develop a plan to make separate measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccines available for children.

Trump has long advocated spacing out childhood vaccinations and separating the combined MMR vaccine into three individual shots.

Public health experts, however, have expressed concern that spacing out vaccinations could increase the risk of children contracting vaccine-preventable diseases before returning for subsequent appointments.

Childhood vaccines and their recommended schedules undergo extensive testing, while their safety continues to be monitored after approval.

Trump described the announcement as a “major victory for parents’ rights, religious and constitutional rights, and for the gold standard of science.”

Speaking at the White House, the president also repeatedly suggested that the number or timing of childhood vaccines could be connected to the rise in autism diagnoses.

However, scientific consensus and decades of research have found no link between childhood vaccines and autism.

President of the American Academy of Paediatrics, Dr Andrew Racine, criticised the recommendations, saying they could create unnecessary uncertainty and confusion among parents.

“Science about vaccines and their efficacy has not changed,” Racine said, adding that previous recommendations should remain in place.

He noted that neither the distribution of viruses and other pathogens nor the circumstances surrounding children had changed enough to warrant the proposed revisions.

Republican senator and physician, Bill Cassidy, also criticised the executive order, saying vaccines are safe and do not cause autism.

“I’m a doctor. This executive order is wrong,” Cassidy said, arguing that Trump does not have the medical expertise to make such changes.

Under the US system, states retain the authority to require vaccinations for schoolchildren, rather than the federal government. However, the executive order encourages states with school vaccination mandates to consider aligning their laws with the administration’s preferred schedule.

The order comes amid broader efforts by Trump’s administration to overhaul federal vaccine policy.
