The United States Secret Service Director, Kimberly Cheatle, has resigned, US media reported on Tuesday.

Her resignation comes a day after she admitted the agency’s failure to prevent the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump.

The incident has sparked bipartisan calls for Cheatle to step down. The attack occurred penultimate Saturday evening during Trump’s campaign in Butler, Pennsylvania.

LEADERSHIP reports that the attack took place on July 13 during a campaign rally in Pennsylvania, where a 20-year-old gunman wounded the Republican presidential candidate.

Trump reacted to the failed assassination attempt on social media, revealing that the bullet hit his upper ear. He expressed his condolences to the victims of the attack and thanked the Secret Service and other law enforcement agencies for their swift response.
