Tottenham’s interim manager, Igor Tudor, has declared that ensuring the club avoids relegation from the Premier League is the most formidable challenge of his managerial career.
Spurs currently sit 16th in the league with 29 points, a mere four points clear of the drop zone, with 11 matches remaining. This precarious position follows Sunday’s disappointing 4-1 home defeat to fierce north London rivals, Arsenal. Reports suggest that relegation to the Championship could result in a staggering £260 million collapse in the club’s annual revenue.
Tudor, appointed earlier this month after Thomas Frank’s departure, brings a wealth of experience from his previous stints at top European clubs including Juventus, Lazio, Marseille, Galatasaray, and Udinese. When asked if saving Spurs’ season was his biggest rescue mission, the Croatian responded, “Probably, if I see, if I recognise the difficulties there are, probably, yes.”
The club’s remaining fixtures include a crucial trip to Fulham this Sunday, a visit to bottom-of-the-table Wolves, and home clashes against fellow strugglers Crystal Palace, Brighton, Nottingham Forest, and Leeds.
With only two home league wins this season, the 47-year-old Tudor described their predicament as, in sporting terms, “a question of life or death.” Amidst an injury crisis that saw 11 players sidelined last weekend and without a league win since 28th December, Tudor admitted that securing positive results might override any desire to play attractive football in the upcoming matches.
“You need to be smart to understand deeper the moment and the way how to take the points, even not looking to the style now at this moment,” he explained. “So the style I need to be in the second moment, just because now it’s a question of life and death, if I can say that in that way, sportingly. Let’s figure that out.”
Tudor emphasised that determination and concentration would be paramount to turning the situation around. “Daily work, focus on all the things we need to do – physical condition, mental condition, performance and waiting on players to come back,” he stated. “So we need to be focused on us, what we can do, less thinking about others and it should be good.”
